Thermal Oxidizer Systems

A.H. Lundberg’s Thermal Oxidizer Systems are designed to handle VOC gases of varying concentration and composition to meet or exceed all environmental requirements.

Operators of industrial processes that emit Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) have long known that a thermal oxidizer is the best solution to employ in the destruction of these emissions. The challenge, however, is minimizing fuel and operating costs while destroying the VOCs.

AHL’s Regenerative Thermal Oxidizer (RTO) and Regenerative Catalytic Oxidizer (RCO) are a proven economical and energy-efficient family of technologies designed to meet this challenge.

In addition, AHL also offers a Direct-fired Oxidizer (DFO), which has become the primary choice for disposal of the waste gas streams for many clients in the pulp and paper industry. The system is designed to thermally oxidize contaminants in waste gas streams such as strong and dilute NCG, and stripper off-gas, The steam from the evaporator vapour head is then transferred to the Mechanical Vapour Compressor (MVR).

Regenerative Thermal Oxidizer and Regenerative Catalytic Oxidizer

AHL’s Regenerative Thermal Oxidizer incorporates high preheat efficiency with broad operational flexibility. It allows your industry to economically achieve compliance with strict local, provincial and federal emission regulations. The oxidizer is designed to safely operate from 840° to 1100° C.

AHL’s Regenerative Catalytic Oxidizer provides industries with a proven, low temperature solution for VOC emission control. Compared to an equivalent duty RTO, the RCO is smaller and less expensive in capital and operating cost since it operates at a low temperature of 450° C.

RTOs and RCOs are ideal to address industrial processes such as:

The hallmark of AHL’s design is simplicity, which equates to ease of maintenance and high reliability. Each system is designed as a vertical “tank” which is divided into twin heat recovery chambers. Fast acting poppet valves are utilized to switch the direction of the gas stream within these heat recovery chambers.

Direct-fired Oxidizer

AHL’s DFO (or incinerator) has been specifically developed over the years to withstand the harsh environments of the pulp and paper industry. It is also ideal for thermal oxidation of waste gases in other industries. The incinerator is designed to provide Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) and Total Reduced Sulphur (TRS) destruction efficiencies exceeding 99.99%. AHLS has more than 35 of these DFO systems operating worldwide.

These incinerators can be designed for continuous or intermittent (rapid start-up) operation, as appropriate.

Enhancements to thermal oxidizers can include:

Specialized Burner Nozzles

When thermal oxidation of waste gases is possible by injection into an existing incinerator, kiln, or boiler, we offer custom-designed burner nozzles to safely inject the waste gas and assure complete destruction. The burner nozzles may be designed for multiple feeds, separate support gas, combustion air, or a combination of the aforementioned.
